MIDF supports The National Climate Governance Summit 2023
Climate Governance Malaysia launched the first national summit on climate governance which was held from 5 until 7 September 2023 at Sasana Kijang with the support of Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM), SME Corp. Malaysia, FIDE FORUM, the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia (ICDM), the Malaysian Institute of Governance (MCG) and the United Nations Development Programme.
The objective is to empower listed companies and SMEs in Malaysia to build climate-resilient businesses and contribute to climate governance through enhanced knowledge and understanding of climate action and best practices.
It was the only sustainability event specifically targeting SMEs in Malaysia, comprising 97.2% of business establishments that featured more than 90 speakers, including the keynote by His Royal Highness The Regent of Pahang, Crown Prince of Pahang, YB Minister Nik Nazmi, YB Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong and Datin Seri Sunita Mei Lin Rajakumar, Chairperson of Climate Governance Malaysia as well as 18 workshops designed to deliver content targeted for SMEs.
The three-day event, attended by over 1300 participants and speakers, saw various presentations, both in-person and virtual, by subject matter experts including En. Fadzlan Abu Bakar from our Development Finance Business (DFB), Mr Niloy Banerjee, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, Dr Surina Ismail, Group Head of Sustainability at 101 Corporation Bhd, Mr. Apurva Sanghi, Lead Economist for Malaysia World Bank, Ms. Sharmila Sekarajasekaran, Independent Non-Executive Director of Top Glove Corporation Berhad, Dr. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Senior Advisor at Khazanah Research Institute, Ms. Serina Hijjas Chairperson of Green building index and En. Harith Ridzuan, CEO of The Green Factory which specialises in the manufacturing of sustainable lifestyle products.
Some of the topics discussed throughout the summit included Climate Ambition in A Nation of Mega-Biodiversity, Financing For SMEs: Brown to Green, Balancing Economic Growth with Sustainability and Wellbeing, The Economics of the Climate Crisis and Best Practices and Initiatives to Support Climate Action: Energy Efficiency and Circularity.
